The Start-up Visa Program in Canada seeks immigrant entrepreneurs with the abilities and ability to start firms in Canada that are:

  • Capable of creating jobs for Canadians
  • Capable of competing on a global scale

Do you have a novel business concept? If one of the recognized groups supports your concept, you may be allowed to immigrate to Canada.

Who is eligible to apply?

To be eligible for the Start-up Visa Program, you must satisfy the following conditions:

  • Have a qualified business.
  • Get a letter of support from a recognized organization.
  • Meet the language requirements.
  • Bring enough money for yourself.

have a qualified business

A qualified business is one that fits the following criteria:

  • When you get a commitment from a recognized organization:
  • Each applicant owns 10% or more of the voting rights linked to all outstanding shares of the corporation at the time (up to 5 people can apply as owners)
  • Applicants and the designated organization together own more than half of the total voting rights connected to all outstanding shares of the corporation at the moment.
  • You offer active and continuous management of this business from within Canada at the time you get your permanent residence.
  • An important part of the business’s activities take place in Canada.

get a letter of support from a recognised organisation

A letter of support from a specified organization is required (a business group that has been approved to invest in or support possible start-ups).

  • Contact the chosen organization to learn how to obtain its assistance and persuade the organization that you have a viable business plan;
  • Obtain a letter of support from the selected group
    Each organization has its own approach to pitching its concept.

Every organization has its own set of criteria. You may be requested to demonstrate your company concept in person or to submit a complete business plan, for example.

meet the language requirements

The capacity to communicate and operate in English, French or both languages will benefit your Canadian business.

We will not accept your application unless you take a language test from an approved organization and provide the results.

You must achieve at least the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 5 in either English or French in all four areas:

The Canadian government does not provide financial assistance to new start-up visa immigrants.

When you apply, you must demonstrate that you have enough money to sustain yourself and your dependents after you arrive in Canada. You cannot borrow this money from anybody else.
