Community support and an exploratory visit

Interested candidates must get formal approval from an Alberta rural community. Candidates should arrange an exploratory trip to Alberta to meet with local business connections, economic development officers, and other possible contacts in order to secure this support.

Applicants must submit an Exploratory Visit Report documenting their journey after completing their exploratory visit. This should contain information about meetings with business connections and economic development groups, summaries of other business activities, specifics regarding visits to existing business locations, and talks with current owners if the applicant intends to buy an existing firm.

Applicants must supply a copy of the Rural Entrepreneur Stream Business Proposal Summary to the rural community contact person. If the community votes to support the business idea, a Community Support Letter will be issued. This is a mandatory component of the Rural Entrepreneur Stream application.

Work Experience Applicants must have at least one of the following types of work experience:

  • Three years of active company ownership/management experience during the last ten years
  • Four years of senior management experience within the last ten years.
